Is counselling covered by my insurance?

Accepted Answer

Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for counselling services, although
coverage varies depending on your insurance provider and plan. Some plans cover
services provided by a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), while others may cover
services provided by psychologists, social workers, or other regulated mental health
professionals. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to confirm
your coverage, reimbursement limits, and any requirements that may apply. Clients are
responsible for verifying their own benefits before attending counselling.

How much does counselling cost in BC?

Accepted Answer

The cost of counselling in BC varies depending on the counsellor's training, credentials, and experience. At SteadyCore Counselling, our standard session fee is $150 for a 60-minute individual session, and $165 for a 60-minute couple/family counselling session with a Registered Clinical Counsellor. We believe in transparency around fees and are happy to discuss what to expect before you book.Many extended health insurance plans in BC cover counselling with a Registered Clinical Counsellor. We recommend checking with your provider to confirm your coverage, as plans vary significantly in the amount they reimburse per session and annually.We also offer a free 15-minute initial consultation so you can ask questions, get a sense of our approach, and determine whether SteadyCore is the right fit for you before committing to a full session.For those seeking a more affordable counselling option, Leila Howard and Devana Weiss provide clinical supervision to intern counsellors through a non-profit  organization in BC where sessions are available at a significantly reduced rate of $25. Do you offer in-person and virtual counselling in BC?

Yes. SteadyCore Counselling offers secure and convenient online counselling (in addition to in-person) to individuals, couples, and families across British Columbia and select provinces. Virtual sessions provide the same thoughtful, Bowen Family Systems informed approach as our in-person appointments, and are a flexible option for clients who prefer to meet from the comfort of their own home or who are located outside of our North Vancouver and Surrey offices.

Online counselling at SteadyCore is well suited for individuals navigating anxiety, stress, life transitions, and relationship challenges, as well as couples and families seeking to understand and shift long-standing patterns.

We are also open to working with clients outside of British Columbia depending on the counselling regulations of your province or country. If you are located outside of BC and are interested in working with us, we encourage you to reach out and we will do our best to explore whether virtual counselling is an option for your situation.

Differentiation of self is one of the central concepts in Bowen Family Systems Theory and one of the most meaningful ideas we work with at SteadyCore Counselling. At its core differentiation of self refers to a person's ability to maintain a clear and stable sense of who they are — their own values, beliefs, and ways of thinking — while remaining genuinely connected to the important people in their life. It is the capacity to stay emotionally present in close relationships without losing yourself in them or reactively pulling away from them.

In practical terms a more differentiated person is able to think clearly and act according to their own values even when the people around them are anxious, upset, or pressuring them to think or feel differently. They can be close and connected without becoming emotionally fused with others, and they can hold their own position calmly without becoming defensive or aggressive. This is not about being distant, rigid, or emotionally unavailable — quite the opposite. Differentiation actually supports deeper and more genuine connection because it is based on choice rather than emotional reactivity.
